Jeff, I wanted to confirm something you said yesterday – you expect to open registration for the April Autocross next Wednesday. Is that correct? What was the time?

Great event and it turned out to be a great first time event for the friend I enticed to join us. He was able to bounce back and forth between the track and the skidpad to work on getting control of rear end traction.

LOVED the new timing/scoring set up. WELL DONE to the team.

Things to think about: Second timing display at the trailer, announcing audio out at pregrid.

Cliff, As you suggest, I am more concerned about width. I’m not so worried about diameter – the xi rides higher than the other E-46s, and 245/35R18 is not an available size in the Direzza ZII.

Thanks to both of you for your feedback.

The wheels in question are VMR V703s with what appears to be a 40 mm offset (based on my measurement at ~41 mm and the VMR standard offerings for that wheel). From the Bimmerfest database it looks like 255/35R18s can be run on an E-46, although I don’t know if the xi has any significant differences in geometry than might cause a problem.

My inclination is to go with the 245/40R18s, which would seem to give me a little margin (and are currently running $43 less per tire at Tire Rack).

I thought the day ran very well, despite the huge crowd of newbies and the timer glitches. I LOVED the course, especially the little ‘gifts’ you would find when you got the line just right, as well as the ‘traps’ where you would get bit if you believed what you thought you were looking at. That said, it WAS a tricky course to see – I had about 3 times the number of rides as a Driver Coach as at any other event, and was continuing to help spot the course for my drivers even into the third or fourth run. I made mistakes despite having helped lay it out. If we would want to continue to do this scale of course (and I think we should!) I think we would need to have another hundred-plus additional cones to be able to provide a visual density that would be easier to follow. But, is there even room in the truck for ~100 more cones?!
