I’m doing a head gasket replacement, and I noticed a problem when I was removing the AC belt.

This belt had been replaced less than a year ago, so I figured it should have no issue.

Notice the crack *along the length* of the belt.

It turns out that the crank pulley had a small pebble wedged in it between two of the ribs, and this had cracked the belt right along its length. The last photo shows where the pebble had been located. I’ll obviously clean up the pulley before I put a new belt on it.

But just keep in mind that even though your belts are relatively new, you should still double check them before events. I’m glad that nothing came of this, but I’d hate to have a belt snap on me.
